1909 - 2015
Born Nicholas (Nicky) George Wertheim on 19th May 1909, Nicky was the middle child of three to parents Rudolf and Babette. His elder sister, Lottie born Charlotte, was 20 years Nicholas’ senior and the youngest, Robert, known to all as Bobby was born six years after him.
In 1916, two years into the Great War, at the age of seven, Winton attended his first school, University College School in Frognal, Hampstead. After seven years, in 1923, he moved to Stowe School, Buckinghamshire, the newly formed all boy’s school in a magnificent Grade I listed country house, which included the 400-acre landscape garden designed by Capability Brown.
Aged 17, he finished school in 1926. He had joined as a boy and was leaving as a man. Financial Services was his industry of choice for his future career and after just two years of work in the city, he was posted to Germany in 1929. He was snapped up in 1937 by the prestigious Stock Exchange, where he became a stockbroker in Crews & Co
After a year in this job, instead of going on a well-deserved skiing holiday, Winton got a call to travel to Prague on a three-week voyage which people still talk about 80 years later.
